Wrinkles may be grouped into two types: Dynamic wrinkles, which are formed when muscles contract, and Static wrinkles, which are lines or depressions that exist even when there is no muscle action or pull on the skin. Dynamic wrinkles are best treated with neurotoxins like BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®, whereas static wrinkles are best treated with substances that plump up and fill out the problem lines; these substances are known medically as dermal fillers.

Today, neurotoxin injection is by far the most popular cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. In fact, almost 11 million people in the US have been treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic since 2002 and Dysport® has been used in 36 countries worldwide.  BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are both purified proteins that are made from the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. They work by stopping the release of a special neurotransmitter, Acetylcholine, which is needed for the muscle to contract properly. By stopping the action of Acetylcholine, the muscle movement is decreased, which then in turn decreases the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles that are formed by the repeated movement of a muscle. The difference between BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® is that they are different proteins, but both derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Because of the different proteins, the dosing of the two products is different, but both products work well, and both are FDA approved for moderate to severe glabellar lines associated with corrugator and/or procerus muscle activity. These muscles create the "11's" or the vertical lines in between the brows that give the appearance of always frowning.

During the injection procedure, a small amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® is injected directly into the individual facial muscles that are responsible for creating wrinkles in the overlying skin. By weakening those muscles and preventing the pulling on the skin BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® help to minimize the wrinkles. They have the most dramatic effect on "expression wrinkles." These are the frown lines or furrows found between the eyebrows, the horizontal forehead lines or furrows, bunny lines on the nose, and the crow’s feet around the eyes. Patients who notice these types of wrinkles will usually see remarkable and rapid improvement after treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®. The actual injections take only minutes to administer, and noticeable results can usually be seen within as few as two to eight days with full results seen in up to fourteen days. Our patients are able to return to work and wear makeup immediately after treatment.

You will notice that the lines will be softened, but may not completely disappear. With regular treatments, the appearance of these lines will be greatly reduced. The effects of a single treatment will usually last three to four months, at which time another BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® injection may be required to continue seeing desirable results.
