BOTOX®, Restylane® & Juvederm™ for Wrinkles at Baltimore Washington Eye Center serving greater Baltimore & Washington, D.C.

Wrinkles may be grouped into two types: Dynamic wrinkles, which are formed when muscles contract, or Static wrinkles, which are lines or depressions that exist even when there is no muscle action or pull on the skin. Dynamic wrinkles are best treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic, whereas static wrinkles are best treated with substances that plump up and fill out the problem lines; these substances are known medically as "dermal fillers."

Today, BOTOX® is by far the most popular cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. BOTOX® is actually a purified protein derived from Botulinum Toxin Type A. During the BOTOX® injection procedure, a small amount of BOTOX® is injected directly into the individual facial muscles that are responsible for creating wrinkles in the overlying skin. By weakening those muscles and preventing the pulling on the skin BOTOX® helps to minimize diminish the wrinkles. BOTOX® has the most dramatic effect on "expression wrinkles." These are the frown lines or furrows found between the eyebrows, the horizontal forehead lines or furrows, and the crow’s feet around the eyes. Patients who notice these types of wrinkles will usually see remarkable and rapid improvement after treatment with BOTOX®.

The actual BOTOX® injections take only minutes to administer, and noticeable results can usually be seen within two to eight. Our patients are able to return to work and wear makeup immediately after treatment.

You will notice that the lines will be softened, but may not completely disappear. With regular treatments, the appearance of these lines will be greatly reduced. The effects of a single treatment will usually last three to four months, at which time another BOTOX® injection may be required to continue seeing desirable results. The best way to find out if you are a good candidate for BOTOX® is to schedule a thorough evaluation and discussion so that we can determine if BOTOX® will produce the effects and results you desire.

On the other hand, static wrinkles or deep facial grooves that are present even when the face is relaxed respond well to dermal fillers, such as Restylane® and Juvéderm®, among others.

Dermal fillers are easy to inject and are biodegradable and thus not permanent. They are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. The two most popular dermal fillers are Restylane® and Juvéderm®. Areas that can be dramatically improved using these fillers include lips, nasolabial folds (the lines just lateral to the mouth/nose or “parentheses”), marionette lines (the lines just below the lip corners), tear trough (area along the lower orbital rim), and cheeks. Filler results are seen almost immediately and can last up to 6-9 months, depending on the area treated and the product used.

Depending on your areas of concern and the type of wrinkle, Oculofacial Surgeon Chimene Richa, M.D.  at Baltimore Washington Eye Center will suggest  using BOTOX®, or Juvéderm® or Restylane®, or perhaps injecting a combination of the materials in order to achieve the best possible results.
