Founded in 1969 by Dr. Paul A. Kohlhepp, Baltimore
Washington Eye
Center is the region’s premier eye care
facility. Our extensively trained,
professional staff specializes in a full range
of ophthalmology procedures
and has achieved an outstanding record of success.

of medical expertise, a patient-centered approach
to customer service, and personalized attention,

Now under the medical direction of Dr. Arturo
E. Betancourt, we can state with confidence that
Baltimore Washington Eye Center is now the most
comprehensive eye care center in the area. Our
Center – which rivals the nationally renowned
John Hopkins and University of Maryland institutes
– offers a full range of eye care services
for adults and children, including general ophthalmology;
cataract evaluation and surgery; laser vision
correction; glaucoma diagnosis and treatment;
oculoplastic surgery; eyelid surgery; diabetic
retinopathy; macular degeneration; low vision
rehabilitation; a full service optical center;
and, a nationally accredited, fully equipped,
state-of-the-art, on-site ambulatory surgery center.
Our surgical center, located between Baltimore
and Washington, DC, offers the latest amenities
and modern technology, allowing us to perform
all of our procedures safely and effectively.
Dr. Betancourt and the professional staff of
Baltimore Washington Eye Center invite you to
visit our offices during normal business hours
Monday through Friday. Evening and Saturday appointments
are also available. We have two locations. Our primary location is in the Empire
Medical Building at 200 Hospital Drive, Suite
600 in Glen Burnie, Maryland (across the street
from Baltimore Washington Medical Center), near Interstate
97 and Route 100. Our satellite office is conveniently situated in the Riverhill Professional Center in Howard County. For the convenience of our Howard County patients we also have a full-service location in the Riverhill Professional Center in Clarksville, near the intersection of Routes 32 and 108.

.: Dr. Arturo E. Betancourt
The President and Medical Director of Baltimore
Washington Eye Center, Dr. Betancourt is a talented
eye surgeon who joined our practice in 1988. He
brings to our Center unparalleled training, education,
experience, and exceptional leadership.
After earning his undergraduate and medical
degrees with honors from the University of Puerto
Rico, Dr. Betancourt interned at the Letterman
Army Medical Center in San Francisco. Soon after,
in 1983, he began his ophthalmology residency
at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington,
D.C. Dr. Arturo Betancourt has kept his clinical
skills current through continuing education courses
and a lecturing position at the reputable University
of Maryland and at the Uniformed Services, University
of Health Sciences.
Before joining Baltimore Washington Eye Center,
Dr. Betancourt served as a flight surgeon in the
Middle East and practiced ophthalmology at the
William Beaumont Army Medical Center, gaining
extensive experience in cataract and implant surgery,
laser therapy for retinal disease, and glaucoma
treatment. He is a diplomate of the American Board
of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons,
as well as a member of the American Society of
Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Medical
and Surgical Faculty of Maryland.

  .: Dr. Brad V. Spagnolo
A committed and personable surgeon, Dr. Brad
Spagnolo earned his undergraduate degree from
George Washington University and his medical degree
from Temple University. He completed a three-year
ophthalmology residency program at the George
Washington University Medical Center, then completed
a fellowship in corneal disease at the Kresge
Eye Institute in Detroit, Michigan, under the
direction of renowned expert Dr. Jayne S. Weiss.
He has substantial experience in corneal transplantation,
laser vision correction surgery, and cataract
surgery with lens implantation.
Dr. Spagnolo is a diplomate of the American Board
of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American
Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society
of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the International
Society of Refractive Surgery.

.: Dr. Steve Hudson
Dr. Steve Hudson, a Board-certified ophthalmologist, is the latest addition to our medical staff at the Baltimore Washington Eye Center. Dr. Hudson earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland, and completed his internship at the National Naval Medical Center. In 2005, he completed his ophthalmology residency at the Medical University of South Carolina, where he served as Chief Resident.
Dr. Hudson evaluates and treats patients with a wide range of medical and surgical eye diseases and is skilled in cataract surgery, glaucoma filtering techniques, and oculoplastics, including eyelid and brow procedures. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

.: Dr. Shari Strier
Our resident optometrist Dr. Shari Strier is
a cornerstone of Baltimore Washington Eye Center,
received her undergraduate degree with honors
from Tulane University and earned her Doctor of
Optometry degree from the State University of
New York College of Optometry – where she
graduated first in her class.
Dr. Strier completed her residency at the Veterans
Administration Medical Center in Baltimore. There,
she closely studied the diagnosis and therapeutic
management of ocular diseases, pre- and post-operative
management of cataract, glaucoma, and retinal
surgeries.
Since joining Baltimore Washington Eye Center
in 1997 as its Director of Clinical Services,
Dr. Strier’s clinical responsibilities have
included routine eye care for patients of all
ages, evaluation and management of chronic and
acute eye diseases (including diabetic eye disease,
macular degeneration, and glaucoma), and fitting
of routine and specialty contact lenses.
A premier optometrist in the Baltimore region,
Dr. Shari Strier is a member of the American Optometric
Association and has Fellowship with the American
Academy of Optometry. She has also been appointed
by the Governor of Maryland to sit on the Quality
Enhancement and Insurance Committee for the Board
of Examiners in Optometry.

  .: Dr. Jenny Hahne
The most recent Doctor to join our team is Jenny Hahne.
She is a graduate of Texas A&M University in College Station,
Texas and earned her Doctor of Optometry degree with honors from
Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. There,
she completed internships in pediatrics, contact lenses and ocular
disease before externing at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Institute
in Miami, Florida.
Dr. Hahne also completed a residency at the Veterans
Administration Medical Center in Baltimore, where she received
extensive clinical experience in diagnosis and treatment of ocular
disease including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration,
glaucoma and pre-and post-operative cataract management. During
her residency, she learned from daily lectures at Johns Hopkins
(Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute).
Dr. Hahne prides herself in providing exceptional eye care
to each of her patients. Although she has expertise in all areas of
eye care, she is especially proficient in diagnosing and managing
ocular disease. Further, she enjoys finding that perfect fit for
each of her contact lens patients.
In her pursuit of excellence, Dr. Jenny Hahne is a member of
the American Optometric Association and is a registered Optometrist
in the states of Texas, Florida and Maryland.
