Orbital Facial Fractures at Baltimore Washington Eye Center serving greater Baltimore & Washington, D.C.

Orbital Trauma

Trauma to the orbit or face can cause damage to the fine bone structures of the eye socket and surrounding facial.  Often a ball or a fist can result in blowout of the very thin bones, especially of the floor of the orbit and the medial wall (the wall between the eye and the nose). The bones in these areas provide a barrier between the sinus cavities and the orbit. Fractures of the face and orbit often cause certain clinical findings. These may include visible abnormality, a fracture that can be felt along the orbital rim, double vision, and numbness along the side of the nose or the cheek, sinus congestion, bleeding from the nose, and a sunken appearance to the eye. Severe cases can also cause vision loss. If a fracture is suspected, a CT-scan of your orbits and facial bones will be obtained. This will be done a specific way so as to best image the bones in question. Not all facial/orbital fractures require repair. A period of observation may be warranted depending on the severity and nature of the fracture. Should you require repair of a facial/orbital fracture, this will be done in a hospital setting under general anesthesia. This may require the use of synthetic materials to repair the bones and reconstruct the orbit. This may require an overnight stay in the hospital. Baltimore Washington Eye Center physicians have extensive experience in evaluating, treating and repairing orbital fractures.
